Why Categories Are Your Most Powerful Ranking Lever
Google uses your primary category to determine which search queries your listing is eligible to appear for. A roofer who sets their primary category to "Contractor" instead of "Roofing Contractor" is immediately less visible for every "roofer near me" search — Google doesn't know you're specifically a roofer.
Secondary categories expand your eligible query set. Each category you add opens up a new bucket of searches your listing can appear in. A plumber who adds "Boiler Service" as a secondary category suddenly becomes eligible for "boiler service [city]" queries they weren't appearing in before.
Unlike reviews or photos — which take weeks to accumulate — getting your categories right is a 5-minute change that can produce immediate ranking improvements.
How to Choose Your Primary Category
Your primary category should be the most specific description of your core business. The rule is: specific beats generic, always.
To find the right primary category:
- Go to your GBP dashboard and click Edit Profile → Business category
- Type your business type in the search box and review all matching options before selecting
- Compare against what your top 3 competitors are using — search your main service in Google Maps and look at the categories showing on their profiles
- Check whether Google shows category-based attributes (e.g., "Black-owned," "women-led") under your chosen category — these are additional trust signals
Don't pick a primary category just because it's more common. "General Contractor" might be a popular choice, but if you primarily do roofing, "Roofing Contractor" will outperform it for the queries that actually bring you business.
Adding Secondary Categories Strategically
You can add up to 9 secondary categories. Don't leave these empty — each one you add is a ranking opportunity for additional search queries.
The strategy: think about every service you offer and find the most specific GBP category that matches it. If you offer it and Google has a category for it, add it.
However, don't add categories for services you don't offer. Google's spam filters can detect category-service mismatches (especially when review content doesn't mention the categories you're claiming), and it can trigger a review of your listing.

Common Category Mistakes
- Using "Contractor" instead of the specific type — "Roofing Contractor" will always outperform "Contractor" for roofing searches
- Not adding secondaries at all — leaving 8 free category slots unused is leaving ranking potential on the table
- Adding categories for aspirational services — claiming categories for services you plan to offer eventually can trigger policy reviews now
- Copying a competitor's categories blindly — they may have the wrong ones too, or their service mix may differ from yours
- Never reviewing categories after Google updates — Google adds and retires categories regularly; your perfect choice from 2023 may no longer be the best option in 2026
