The Real Impact of GBP Photos on Rankings
Google's own data (published in their Business Profile support pages) shows businesses with photos receive dramatically more customer actions — calls, direction requests, and website clicks — than those without. The algorithm interprets photo-related engagement (views, clicks on photos) as a signal of business quality and customer interest.
Photo activity also signals that your business is alive and actively managed. A profile whose last photo upload was two years ago signals to Google that the listing may be stale or the business may have closed. Regular photo uploads are one of the clearest "we're still open and active" signals you can send.
Every Photo Type — and Which Ones Matter Most
Exterior photos — REQUIRED
At least 3 shots of your premises from different angles and times of day. For service-area businesses with no physical storefront, use photos of your branded vehicle instead. Google uses these to verify your address is real.
Work / product photos — HIGHEST PRIORITY
Before-and-after shots, completed projects, products in use. These are the most viewed photos on trade profiles because customers want to see the quality of work before they call. Aim for 20+ of these.
Team photos — HIGH TRUST IMPACT
Your face and your team's faces. People book people, not businesses. A photo of you in your workwear next to your van converts a browser into a caller more reliably than any amount of copywriting.
Interior photos
For businesses with premises customers visit (workshops, showrooms, offices). Shows you have a real, professional environment. Even a tidy workshop counts.
Certification and accreditation photos
Gas Safe registration, NICEIC approval, CHAS certification, TrustMark — photograph these and upload them. They build immediate trust with customers who need assurance that you're qualified.
Cover photo and logo — SET CORRECTLY
Your cover photo appears at the top of your profile in Maps. Make it your best work photo or a clean branded image. Your logo should be your actual logo, not a photo of a sign. These are the first images customers see.

Don't use: Stock photos, heavily filtered photos, screenshots, photos with text overlays or logos superimposed over the image, or photos that violate Google's content policies. All of these can trigger photo rejection or listing review.
How Often to Add Photos
The optimal cadence for most UK SMEs is 3–5 new photos per week. This is manageable with a phone and a minute of your time after each job or at the end of the week.
A simple system: keep a folder on your phone specifically for GBP photos. After each job, take 2–3 photos (before/after, your team on-site) and drop them in the folder. At the end of the week, upload the best 3–5 from the week's jobs to GBP. It takes 10 minutes.
What to Avoid Uploading
- Photos taken in poor light — they make even quality work look amateurish
- Blurry or low-resolution shots — a bad photo is worse than no photo
- Photos that include customer faces without permission (UK GDPR consideration)
- Stock images — Google can detect these and they're not allowed under GBP policy
- Duplicate photos — uploading the same image twice doesn't help and can look spammy
- Photos of your competitors' work — it happens and Google can sometimes detect it
Managing Customer-Uploaded Photos
Customers can upload photos to your GBP listing — and you can't delete them unless they violate policy. This is actually mostly positive: authentic customer photos carry more perceived credibility than owner-uploaded photos.
However, sometimes customers upload unflattering or misleading photos. If a photo violates Google's policies (personal information visible, sexually explicit, spam), you can flag it for removal via your GBP dashboard. If it doesn't violate policy, you can't remove it — but you can bury it under a volume of high-quality owner-uploaded photos.
