How to Get More Google Reviews for Your UK Business (That Actually Work)

Reviews are currency on Google Maps. The businesses ranking at the top of local searches almost always have more reviews, more recent reviews, and higher scores than the ones below them. Here is the system that works.

Why reviews matter for your Google ranking

Google uses reviews as a direct input into its local ranking algorithm. More reviews signals to Google that your business is active, legitimate, and trusted by real customers. Higher average scores signal quality. Recent reviews signal that you are still trading.

Beyond rankings, reviews influence whether someone clicks on your listing at all. A business with 3 reviews and a 4.0 score will be ignored next to a competitor with 87 reviews and a 4.6 score — even if the map pin is in the same position.

The good news: most UK small businesses have barely any reviews, which means even 20-30 genuine reviews can move you significantly up the local pack.

The right way to ask for a review

Most businesses either never ask, or ask in a way that makes it awkward. Here is what actually works:

1

Ask at the moment of completion, not days later

The best time to ask is immediately after the job is done — when the customer is most satisfied and the experience is fresh. Waiting 3 days means they have moved on and the moment is gone.

2

Make it one step, not five

Send a direct link to your Google review form — not a link to your Google profile where they have to find the review button themselves. Every extra click you add loses half the people who would have reviewed you.

3

Be direct and personal, not corporate

"If you were happy with the work, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It genuinely helps us." is more effective than a formal template email. People respond to people, not businesses.

4

Use text/WhatsApp, not just email

Email open rates for small businesses average around 20%. Text messages have open rates above 90%. For most trades and local services, a WhatsApp message with a review link is the most effective channel by far.

  1. Search for your business on Google Maps
  2. Click on your listing to open it
  3. Click "Share" → "Copy link"
  4. Paste the link and add ?review=1 to the end, or use Google's Place ID tool to generate a direct review link

Alternatively, log in to your Google Business Profile dashboard, go to "Get more reviews", and Google will give you a shareable link that opens the review box directly.

Timing is everything

Google's algorithm weights recent reviews more heavily than old ones. A business with 10 reviews from the past month will often outrank a business with 200 reviews from three years ago.

This means you need a consistent flow of reviews — not a burst campaign where you collect 30 in a week and then nothing for a year. Aim for 2-4 new reviews per month minimum. Set a reminder to ask every customer, every time.

Responding to reviews (and why it matters for SEO)

Responding to every review — positive and negative — is one of the most overlooked ranking signals. Google explicitly states that responding to reviews improves your local visibility. It also tells potential customers that you are attentive and professional.

For positive reviews, keep responses short and genuine. Mention something specific from their review. For negative reviews, stay calm, acknowledge the issue, and offer to resolve it. Never argue in public.

Responses that naturally include your keywords ("Thanks for trusting us with your plumbing repair in Croydon") also help Google understand what you do and where you serve.

What to avoid

Do not buy reviews. Google's systems detect fake reviews at scale, and the penalty is severe — your entire listing can be suspended. It is never worth it.

Do not offer incentives for reviews. "Leave us a review and get 10% off" violates Google's policies and can result in your reviews being removed or your listing being flagged.

Fake reviews also damage trust when sophisticated customers spot the pattern — identical phrasing, accounts with no history, reviews all posted in a single day.

The sustainable approach is building a genuine system: ask every customer, make it easy, respond to every review, and keep the flow consistent. Over 6-12 months, it compounds.
